  1. Find free tiles: A tile is "free" when it has no tile directly touching it on both the left AND right sides. Tiles on the outer edges of a stack are free on at least one side.
  2. Select a tile: Click on a free tile to highlight it — it will glow with a golden border.
  3. Find its match: Click on another free tile with the exact same symbol. Both tiles must be identical.
  4. Clear the pair: If the match is valid, both tiles disappear and you earn points. The pair count updates immediately.
  5. Continue matching: Keep finding and matching pairs until the board is completely empty.

What Makes a Tile "Free"?

A tile is free to select only if both its left edge and right edge are open. A tile with another tile sitting on top of it is also blocked. The visual highlight system helps you identify eligible tiles — valid tiles will have a subtle glow when you hover over them.

  • Base match: +10 points per pair
  • Combo bonus: +5 × combo count bonus for consecutive matches within 3 seconds
  • Level completion: Bonus points awarded for clearing a level under the par time

Mahjong uses 34 unique tile types across several suits. Knowing these helps you spot matches faster:

Characters Suit (🀟-🀧)

Numbers 1 through 9, marked with Chinese numerals (一, 二, 三...) and the character 萬 (ten-thousand). These are the most common tiles.

Bamboo Suit (🀹-🁁)

Numbers 1 through 9, depicted as bamboo stalks. Tile 1 is usually a bird (sparrow).
