📖 The Story Behind Klotski
During the chaotic Three Kingdoms period (220-280 AD), the brilliant warlord Cao Cao was ambushed and trapped at Hua Rong Dao (Huarong Pass). The legendary general Guan Yu guarded the only escape route. The Klotski puzzle recreates this historic moment: you must slide the blocks representing heroes and soldiers to create a path for Cao Cao's 2×2 block to escape through the bottom opening.
This puzzle has been challenging minds for over 2,000 years and is considered one of the three great mechanical puzzles of China, alongside the Tangram and the Nine Linked Rings (九连环).
💡 Classic Level Walkthrough (First 20 Moves)
The standard "Heng Dao Li Ma" layout requires exactly 81 moves for the optimal solution. Here's how to start:
- Move the bottom-left soldier up one space
- Move the bottom-right soldier left one space
- Move Guan Yu (horizontal block) down one
- Move the two bottom soldiers toward the center
- Create a clear vertical path on the left side
- Begin shifting generals downward to make room above Cao Cao
- Continue clearing the area directly below Cao Cao
💡 Key Insight: The first 20 moves are about clearing the path below Cao Cao. Focus on getting the small soldiers out of the bottom-center area. Guan Yu is usually the last major obstacle to move.
🌟 Pro Tips & Strategies
🔎 Tip 1: Work From the Edges Inward
Start by moving pieces on the perimeter. This creates open space in the center for larger pieces to maneuver. The edges are your staging area.
📈 Tip 2: Guan Yu Is the Key
The horizontal 2×1 block is usually the hardest piece to reposition. You'll often need to move it out of the way first, complete other moves, then move it back. Treat Guan Yu as a "gate" that opens and closes the critical path.
🎯 Tip 3: Soldiers Are Your Best Friends
Small 1×1 soldiers can slip into tight spaces that larger pieces can't. Use them to fill gaps temporarily while you reposition generals. A well-placed soldier can hold a position and prevent pieces from sliding back.
🔄 Tip 4: If Stuck, Go Backwards
Sometimes the fastest way forward is to retreat. If you find yourself blocked on all sides, undo a few moves and try a different sequence. Klotski rewards patience over speed.
