How to Play Klotski — Hua Rong Dao

Master the ancient Chinese sliding block puzzle and guide Cao Cao to freedom

📖 The Story Behind Klotski

During the chaotic Three Kingdoms period (220-280 AD), the brilliant warlord Cao Cao was ambushed and trapped at Hua Rong Dao (Huarong Pass). The legendary general Guan Yu guarded the only escape route. The Klotski puzzle recreates this historic moment: you must slide the blocks representing heroes and soldiers to create a path for Cao Cao's 2×2 block to escape through the bottom opening.

This puzzle has been challenging minds for over 2,000 years and is considered one of the three great mechanical puzzles of China, alongside the Tangram and the Nine Linked Rings (九连环).

🎯 Objective

Move the large 2×2 block (Cao Cao) from its starting position at the top of the board to the exit at the bottom center. The opening is exactly 2 units wide — just enough for the warlord to squeeze through.

🎲 How to Play

  1. Select a piece: Click on any block to select it. Valid pieces will highlight with a border.
  2. Determine direction: Pieces can only move horizontally or vertically into adjacent empty cells. No diagonal moves or rotation allowed.
  3. Slide into empty space: Click in the direction you want the piece to move. The block will slide one cell at a time into the adjacent empty space.
  4. Plan your path: Every move counts — the puzzle requires careful planning and sequencing. One wrong move can trap you.
  5. Win: The moment Cao Cao's 2×2 block reaches the bottom-center exit, you've won!

♙ Piece Types & Characters

  • 2×2 Block — Cao Cao (曹操): The largest piece and your goal target. Starts at the top center. Cannot change orientation.
  • 1×2 Vertical — Generals (武将): Four vertical pieces representing Zhang Fei (张飞), Zhao Yun (赵云), Ma Chao (马超), and Huang Zhong (黄忠). These often block the exit path.
  • 2×1 Horizontal — Guan Yu (关羽): The horizontal blocker — historically the general who guarded the pass. This piece is often the single biggest obstacle in the puzzle.
  • 1×1 — Soldiers (卒): Four small pieces that fill gaps and can maneuver through tight spaces. Deceptively important for creating pathways.

🎯 Level Breakdown

  • Beginner — "Training Ground": Fewer pieces, simplified layout. Great for learning the mechanics. Optimal solution: ~18-25 moves.
  • Classic — "Heng Dao Li Ma" (横刀立马): The canonical layout from Chinese history. The most famous configuration worldwide. Optimal solution: 81 moves.
  • Expert — "Ambush at Ten Sides": Complex configuration with very tight spaces. Only for true puzzle masters. Optimal solution: 100+ moves.

💡 Classic Level Walkthrough (First 20 Moves)

The standard "Heng Dao Li Ma" layout requires exactly 81 moves for the optimal solution. Here's how to start:

  1. Move the bottom-left soldier up one space
  2. Move the bottom-right soldier left one space
  3. Move Guan Yu (horizontal block) down one
  4. Move the two bottom soldiers toward the center
  5. Create a clear vertical path on the left side
  6. Begin shifting generals downward to make room above Cao Cao
  7. Continue clearing the area directly below Cao Cao
💡 Key Insight: The first 20 moves are about clearing the path below Cao Cao. Focus on getting the small soldiers out of the bottom-center area. Guan Yu is usually the last major obstacle to move.

🌟 Pro Tips & Strategies

🔎 Tip 1: Work From the Edges Inward

Start by moving pieces on the perimeter. This creates open space in the center for larger pieces to maneuver. The edges are your staging area.

📈 Tip 2: Guan Yu Is the Key

The horizontal 2×1 block is usually the hardest piece to reposition. You'll often need to move it out of the way first, complete other moves, then move it back. Treat Guan Yu as a "gate" that opens and closes the critical path.

🎯 Tip 3: Soldiers Are Your Best Friends

Small 1×1 soldiers can slip into tight spaces that larger pieces can't. Use them to fill gaps temporarily while you reposition generals. A well-placed soldier can hold a position and prevent pieces from sliding back.

🔄 Tip 4: If Stuck, Go Backwards

Sometimes the fastest way forward is to retreat. If you find yourself blocked on all sides, undo a few moves and try a different sequence. Klotski rewards patience over speed.
